The Vintage Years of Airfix Box Art $42.24 Airfix has been commercially producing plastic kits since 1952 and its models have been made by successive generations of young boys and men alike. In the 1960s, a talented graphic artist called Roy Cross was commissioned to paint some of the box art for Airfix, and for a ten-year-period he provided many of the glorious paintings seen on the boxes, setting new standards for realism and accuracy. Many are still being used today, a full four decades later. Inside the pages of this book are some of Roy's best artworks, shown here in full format and in superb detail, with many reproduced here in book form for the very first time. As well as his vintage box art, Roy has included many sketches and alternative versions of his Airfix box art. After Roy left Airfix in 1974, the company went through a turbulent time. The present owners are Hornby, who have ambitious plans for Airfix and the other brands it acquired including Scalextric and Corgi. The decade that Roy Cross worked for Airfix, though, could be classed as their vintage era, with some of their finest models being produced then in their millions, ready for eager youngsters to build up into detailed miniature models of their favorite aircraft, ships and locomotives. |

The Boys' Book of Airfix: Who Says You Ever Have to Grow Up? $26.73 In 2009, Airfix, the most famous plastic model construction kit company in the world, celebrated its 70th birthday. Founded in 1939 by Hungarian Nicholas Kove, Airfix holds a unique appeal for boys (and girls) of all ages and has been part of the fabric of childhood for generations. Packed with photos of the kits from the 1950s to the present, "The Boys' Book of Airfix" is a nostalgic look at one of the greatest brands ever. In addition to the history behind the models, from the first Airfix kit--a model tractor--right up to today's exciting "Doctor Who" releases, it tells the story of the dramatic twists and turns of the Airfix saga. In the autumn of 2006 it looked as if the great name might disappear for ever when its owners languished in receivership, only for the company to be heroically rescued by Hornby. If you were ever responsible for sending an Airfix Messerschmidt to a fiery doom from your bedroom window, this book is for you |

The Conversion $6.83 This story takes place in the State of Mississippi during the 1930s. Many of the cotton pickers have a third-grade education and, because of the depression, have little chance of escaping their hard life. The lynching of a young black man is nothing more than entertainment and a distraction in their dull existence. Prejudice is a way of life. J.D. is a born mechanic whose goal is to leave the boredom of the cotton fields and go north in order to better himself. He, and other characters, give us a peek into small-town America and its intrigue. If J.D. achieves his goal, itas because of his innate self-confidence. Hate, love and humor adds the salt to the stew. J.D.as conversion comes slowly as he realizes prejudice comes from hate and an uncompromising mind. |
