Tips For Learning German
It's a great goal to have to want to learn German, but if you've never undertaken the task of learning a langue before, finding out just how to go about it can be downright hard. Some students learn best through independent study. Others students learn best in a classroom. Then there are those who would rather repeat the language or immerse themselves with others who speak the language. There are lots of different ways to learn a new language! You will probably find that learning a language is a lot of trial and error. The following methods should help you get going.
You can start by reading books and magazines in German. Not only will this be a good way to practice your new vocabulary, it will be a great way to learn how to put sentences together and how to learn German grammar. As you will see the grammar and structural rules are unique to the language.
The rules such as these can be naturally absorbed by beginning to read in your new tongue. Reading also helps you to understand what you are hearing when German is spoken. You will also be able to communicate in German better yourself as well as writing in this language too.
Do you have the money to discover an option for completely immersing yourself in German? Some people simply learn best when they are forced to do so. One of the most excellent strategies for getting this to take place is to travel to a country where German (or the language you desire go learn) is the topmost language and your native tongue is scarce. This obligates you to determine how to interact with people you meet and it obligates you to learn German as it is used on a daily basis. Not everybody is successful with immersion. Still, some people discover that it is the exclusive strategy for them to truly comprehend how to communicate in a language that is not their original language.
You will do better if you can think in German. When you think of things in whatever language you speak naturally, try to think them over again in German. This will help you form the habit of using German with your thoughts. If you can think in German naturally, speaking it will become a no-brainer. When you are able to figure out what someone is saying to you instantly, you'll have a much easier time as you won't need translators and you certainly won't have to try to decipher what was said, and risk being wrong.
There are many ways you can make learning German easier. Don't let yourself get too frustrated! Learning a new language can be downright hard! Take your time, work hard and before you know it, you should be able to speak the language fluently!
Everybody can learn to read. Regardless of whether you learn to read English, Chinese or Latin. With the right resources anybody can achieve it.

Death of the Wehrmacht: The German Campaigns of 1942 $32.12 For Hitler and the German military, 1942 was a key turning point of World War II, as an overstretched but still lethal Wehrmacht replaced brilliant victories and huge territorial gains with stalemates and strategic retreats. In this major reevaluation of that crucial year, Robert Citino shows that the German army's emerging woes were rooted as much in its addiction to the "war of movement"--attempts to smash the enemy in "short and lively" campaigns--as they were in Hitler's deeply flawed management of the war. From the overwhelming operational victories at Kerch and Kharkov in May to the catastrophic defeats at El Alamein and Stalingrad, Death of the Wehrmacht offers an eye-opening new view of that decisive year. Building upon his widely respected critique in The German Way of War, Citino shows how the campaigns of 1942 fit within the centuries-old patterns of Prussian/German warmaking and ultimately doomed Hitler's expansionist ambitions. He examines every major campaign and battle in the Russian and North African theaters throughout the year to assess how a military geared to quick and decisive victories coped when the tide turned against it. Citino also reconstructs the German generals' view of the war and illuminates the multiple contingencies that might have produced more favorable results. In addition he cites the fatal extreme aggressiveness of German commanders like Erwin Rommel and assesses how the German system of command and its commitment to the "independence of subordinate commanders" suffered under the thumb of Hitler and chief of staff General Franz Halder. More than the turning point of a war, 1942 marked the death of a very old and traditional pattern of warmaking, with the classic "German way of war" unable to meet the challenges of the twentieth century. Blending masterly research with a gripping narrative, Citino's remarkable work provides a fresh and revealing look at how one of history's most powerful armies began to founder in its quest for world domination. |

Wehrmacht Auxiliary Forces $14.95 Though the 'Wehrmachtsgefolge' (Armed Forces Auxiliaries) were generally inferior to their armed forces equivalents, their contribution to the German war-effort was far from negligible. Auxiliaries including the NSKK, Transportkorps Speer, Reichsarbeitsdienst and Organization Todt supported the Wehrmacht in their duties. In 1944, the strength of these organizations peaked at 3,800,000-40% of the size of the armed forces. As they became increasingly aware of their importance, the Auxiliaries introduced uniform and insignia modifications which made them virtually indistinguishable from their comrades in the armed forces. This book examines the organization, uniforms and history of the various Wehrmacht auxiliary forces. |

The Wehrmacht: History, Myth, Reality $10.67 This book is a profound reexamination of the role of the German army, the Wehrmacht, in World War II. Until very recently, the standard story avowed that the ordinary German soldier in World War II was a good soldier, distinct from Hitler's rapacious SS troops, and not an accomplice to the massacres of civilians. Wolfram Wette, a preeminent German military historian, explodes the myth of a "clean" Wehrmacht with devastating clarity. This book reveals the Wehrmacht's long-standing prejudices against Jews, Slavs, and Bolsheviks, beliefs that predated the prophecies of "Mein Kampf" and the paranoia of National Socialism. Though the sixteen-million-member German army is often portrayed as a victim of Nazi mania, we come to see that from 1941 to 1944 these soldiers were thoroughly involved in the horrific cleansing of Russia and Eastern Europe. Wette compellingly documents Germany's long-term preparation of its army for a race war deemed necessary to safeguard the country's future; World War II was merely the fulfillment of these plans, on a previously unimaginable scale. This sober indictment of millions of German soldiers reaches beyond the Wehrmacht's complicity to examine how German academics and ordinary citizens avoided confronting this difficult truth at war's end. Wette shows how atrocities against Jews and others were concealed and sanitized, and history rewritten. Only recently has the German public undertaken a reevaluation of this respected national institution--a painful but necessary process if we are to truly comprehend how the Holocaust was carried out and how we have come to understand it. |

Sex Crimes Under the Wehrmacht $36.79 In this groundbreaking work, David Raub Snyder offers a nuanced investigation into the German army's prosecution and punishment of sex offenders during the Second World War. In so doing, Snyder restores balance to the literature regarding the military administration of justice under Hitler and to the historiography of sexuality and the Third Reich. Although scholars have devoted considerable attention to military offenses, the literature is largely silent about crimes punishable under civilian law. In many cases, the Wehrmacht's response to rape, sexual assault, homosexual "offenses," child molestation, incest, "racial defilement," and bestiality often depended on the willingness of the offender to continue to bear arms for his country. Snyder notes that, contrary to conventional wisdom, soldiers on the eastern front often received severe punishments for sexual assaults on Soviet civilians. He demonstrates how military expedience and military justice became entangled and conflicted during the war. Snyder also analyzes the Wehrmacht's unique penal and parole system, the first treatment of this important topic in the English language. The Wehrmacht's system functioned as a filtering mechanism that rechanneled willing soldiers back to the front while simultaneously channeling recalcitrant or "incorrigible" soldiers in the opposite direction--to concentration camps for destruction through work at the hands of the SS. Supported by research in Germany and detailed accounts largely unavailable in English until now, Snyder offers new perspectives on justice under the Wehrmacht and the situations of homosexuals, women, and children during wartime. |

Blitzkrieg No Longer: The German Wehrmacht in Battle, 1943 $26.49 A pivotal year of World War II through German eyes The campaigns of the German army, air force, and navy described by a master storyteller Covers the aftermath of Stalingrad, Kursk, Tunisia, Sicily, Italy, the U-boat war, and air battles After a crushing loss at Stalingrad, the German war machine regrouped in early 1943 to stave off total defeat, but it could not stem the rising Allied tide. In the Mediterranean, Rommel's early successes in Africa were erased by the surrender of Tunisia, and German forces barely escaped Sicily before the Allies seized the island. On the Eastern Front, Soviet T-34s beat German armor in the massive tank battle at Kursk. At sea, the Allies countered the U-boat threat, and in the air, Allied forces dominated the Luftwaffe and took the war to the German home front |

The Rise of the Wehrmacht [Two Volumes]: The German Armed Forces and World War II $125 The Rise of the Wehrmacht is the first comprehensive work to deal with the German war effort in World War II from this point of view. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it covers the entire war effort from the point of view of the German military that actually conducted and fought the war, something that has never been done before on this scale. Excellent books have been written about the German Army, Navy, the Luftwaffe, and the SS, as well as about the Panzer branch, the parachute arm, the U-Boat forces, etc., but this is the first to cover them all in depth. Mitcham also covers the German Wehrkreise (roughly translated as military district) system in depth and recognizes its importance, both in the formation and expansion of the German Army before the war and in its continuing importance throughout the conflict. He deals with the German rearmament in greater depth and detail than has been done before, points out the importance of the police in the development of Germany's reserves before and during World War II, and offers new insights into the evolution and development of the German military doctrine of Kesselschlact (the decisive battle of encirclement and annihilation). In addition, The Rise of the Wehrmacht explains the problems the Wehrmacht faced because of its too rapid expansion. This expansion was far more rapid than the German generals intended and resulted in many problems, especially in terms of equipment shortages and a shortage of qualified officers. Finally, Mitcham addresses the contributions of the Hitler Youth to the war effort, where their work on farms, fire and rescue crews, in nursing, and as postal workers, for example, provided essential services to German infrastructure. |

German Pionier 1939-45: Combat Engineer of the Wehrmacht $17.71 The German Army of World War II collectively referred to its various engineer units as Pioniere - what would be called combat engineers in the West. This organization included Pioniertruppen (Pionier Troops), Bautruppen (Construction Troops), Eisenbahntruppen (Railway Troops), and Technische Truppen (Technical Troops). They were first and foremost assault troops, and construction workers second. They were tasked with overcoming manmade and natural obstacles, and in the attack they supported the infantry as specialist assault troops, attacking fortified positions with demolitions and flamethrowers. In the defence they constructed fortifications and shelters, erected obstacles, laid minefields, planted booby traps, cleared fields of fire, erected camouflage, and maintained supply routes. This book examines the recruitment and special training of a German Pionier. It also covers life in the field while on campaign and the of a Pionier role in supporting infantry assaults. |
