Divided By War. Examined By Battle. Bound By Comradeship
Steven Spielberg, once again, turns out to be one of the finest directors and story tellers of our time. Only he could take a story about the relationship between a horse and his boy and change it into a heart warming adventure. The character development is possibly the nicest thing about the film; War Horse has many different characters, some only in the flick for 1 or 2 scenes, but almost right away their roles in the grand story are seen.
Told from the point of view of a gorgeous chestnut steed named Joey, the plot starts in the coarse rural country of pre-WWI Britain where the pony is auctioned off to a drunken farmer (Peter Mullen). His boy Albert (James Irvine) grows to love Joey, and the bond increases as the thoroughbred demonstrates the will to plough even the hard fields of Devonshire.
These scenes, shot using synthetic light and expansive panning recall Westerns of old yet give small inkling to the gripping drama to come. Like over 1 million horses that were called into duty Great War, Joey is sold into army duty where he serves first with the English cavalry, then an achingly agonizing turn in the German infantry, with a brief recess near a French farm under the care of a loving grandfather (Niels Arestrup) and his sons daughter (Celine Buckens).
Maybe the key to appreciating"War Horse online" is the way in which the film permits us, just like Albert, to fall madly in love with this impressive stallion who exudes nobility and engenders feelings with everyone who crosses his course.
Anyone has bonded with a horse knows how transcendent an experience this may be, and Spielberg has created a time-worn classic out of a horse's journey that powerfully and memorably becomes our journey also.
The cinematography is beautiful and the score sweeping. Ravishing visuals - particularly a brutal infantry assault across No Mans Land - plus a solid script ensure that this is an expedition which is first past the post.I can't recommend this film enough. Fantastic; one of the best films of the year!
