You don't have to have a huge space in order to transform it into a lovely French kitchen. Even if you are working with a kitchen in a small apartment or other cramped quarters, the tips below can help you turn that space in a lovely kitchen that you will enjoy spending time in.

Rustic Charm
Rustic charm is one term that may be used to describe a French country kitchen. No matter the size of the space that you are working with, this rustic charm is what you are trying to capture. When you are working with a small space, every single inch counts, and you have to consider each item carefully before deciding to include it.

Cabinets
The cabinet selection is an easy way to infuse some French kitchen country charm. One option is to choose distressed cabinets. Pickled wood cabinets are another interesting choice. An added bonus if you choose the pickled wood is that the light colour can make the space feel larger.

Accessories
In a small kitchen, it is wise to choose decorative accessories that also have a purpose. Some ideas include a cookbook holder with a metal rooster adorning the top, a distressed metal towel holder that folds flat against the wall when not in use and a corner trash can created from hammered copper.

There are many options for accessories that are both beautiful and useful.

Wall Hangings
In some small kitchens you may not even have any room for a wall hanging. If you do then you need to consider the size of the items that you select. You want the scale of the wall hangings to fit the overall size of the room.

Wall hangings, whether a painting or something very creative such as framed antique silverware, is a chance to infuse your own personal style and your own ideas about what a French kitchen country style looks like.

Up Above
Some people ignore the ceiling completely when decorating a room, but this is a mistake. In a small space, use the ceiling as another surface on which to display your French theme. Add some narrow faux exposed beams or choose a faux copper or tin ceiling finish. Both of those options are fairly inexpensive but will add lots of extra charm to your room.

Utility
As mentioned above, it is important that you find items that are rich in utility as well as aesthetics. Also, use all of your space. This might mean adding a floor to ceiling shelving or cabinet area or installing a corner lazy Susan cabinet so as not to waste corner space.

It can be a challenge to decorate a small kitchen, but with a little creativity and careful planning, you can create a French kitchen that will look great.
